Hi, I have purchased a uTrack 24 and 2 x Cymatic Audio DSub25 -> 8x XLR male. This will only be for playback of tracks into a Studiolive Series III mixer.

The Studiolive has Combi jacks that take XLR or TRS. The TRS inputs bypass the gain stage and are scaled to accept line-level signals up to +18 dBFS.

I hope someone can help me out with the cabling. Should I have purchased Cymatic Audio DSub25 -> 8x TRS instead ? Here are links to the 2 types of cabling.

No-one can help with this ? OK, it may be a stupid question , but a little help from Cymatic at least would be helpful.

As far as I can see on a picture of the Studiolive mixer, the combined XLR/jack input is the microphone/line input.
The microphone input uses the XLR connection, the line input the TRS connection. Since the output of the uTrack 24 is at line level, you should use the line input of the mixer, so you should use a SubD25 to TRS cable.
Maybe you can reduce the input sensitivity of the microphone input enough to obtain a correct match, but this is not the way it should be done.
(And don’t even THINK about switching +48V phantom power to the output of the uTrack24…)

    Thanks for the reply.

Yeah, seems to me that the SubD25 to TRS cable is the correct connection although you can set the preamp gain at 0db on the Studiolive desk which I assume matches line level, however I would still be going through the preamp.

I’m not sure why Cymatic even make a SubD25 to XLR cable though, as it doesn’t make sense when the utrack24 outputs are line level ?

Being able to “accidentally” hit the Phantom Power button on the Studiolive seems to be a design flaw with that mixer . I assume that it is still a problem via TRS as it is a combi jack.

No, the 48V phantom power will never appear on the TRS input, only on the XLR (microphone) input.
The reason for offering a SubD25 to XLR cable is that in most professional applications XLR connectors are also used for line level signals.

And don’t think that you bypass the input amplifier stage when using the TRS connector; in most cases the line input is just attenuated before feeding it the the preamplifier stage… (Although sometimes there are exceptions.)
But no worries, the difference won’t be audible for ‘normal’ ears…

Thanks for the helpful information Ruud.

I will be returning the SubD25 to XLR cables and ordering the SubD25 to TRS cables. It’s also great knowing the TRS cables will not conduct Phantom Power.

    Thanks again
