ParticipantHello, I have 2 utrack24. Both make a noticeable repetitive noise when recording. it sounds like the writing on the hard disk, but also with an usb drive the noise is still there. I can hear this noise while recording on headphone, but it is also in the recorded files. I made tests with both machines and disconnected everything (so the device should only record silence), it is still there. The noise is not super loud, but if the 24 tracks are summed & compressed in the mix, you can hear it. For rock’n’roll recording it might be ok, for classical music recording it is a no-go.
I have a sample wav if you want, I can send it to you.
Any idea? Thanks!

Are you using balanced connection?I made tests with both machines and disconnected everything (so the device should only record silence)
Could you please do the same test but connect something to the inputs. I mean to have some load on inputs.
What about the input levels during the recording? Are the levels big enough? I mean the uTrack24 has SNR A-weighted > 100dB with +20dBu input level, if you have much lower level to feed the inputs the SNR can be worse.

I began the test with equipment connected, I ended up with nothing connected. Same results 🙁

Sorry no, I can’t test with a powered drive. But I also tested with an USB thumb an there were similar noises.
But it is not allway there it is repetitive it is not like a “white noise”, i can’t describe it in english but

ParticipantI’ve also measured similar noise on some channels when recording to a portable USB drive with hot, cold, and ground inputs of all channels shorted together. It manifests as short pulses that occur at regular intervals of approximately 1 second and raises the noise spectrum at frequencies up to 2 kHz. The increase on the worst channels is 20 dB at 100 Hz and more at lower frequencies. The worst channels are those with the separate 2-channel A/D converters (7, 8, 15, 16, 23, 24) although the pulse-like noise is also apparent at lower levels on channels 5, 6, 13, 14, 21, 22. It does not appear on the remaining channels. Doing some microsurgery on the USB cable so I could power the same drive from a separate bench power supply resulted in a reduction in this noise of about 20 dB, so it is highly likely to be interference due to hard drive current pulses. Externally powering the drive gives acceptable results for our purposes but this problem could certainly catch people out.
